Child-Pugh Score Calculator

Table of Contents

  • Child Pugh Score 5 to 6 Class A (well-compensated disease)

Patients in Class A typically have well-compensated cirrhosis, with minimal impairment of liver function.

  • Child Pugh Score 7 to 9 Class B (significant functional compromise)

Patients in Class B have significant impairment of liver function but are not as severely affected as those in Class C.

  • Child Pugh Score 10 to 15 Class C (decompensated disease)

Patients in Class C have the most advanced stage of liver disease and are at the highest risk of mortality and complications.

What is the Child-Pugh Score?

The Child-Pugh Score, also known by its variations as Child-Pugh and Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP), is a classification system that helps medical professionals estimate the severity of liver disease, particularly cirrhosis. This score integrates clinical and laboratory parameters to guide patient care and treatment decisions, offering insights into the prognosis and likely mortality risks associated with liver disease.

How is the Child-Pugh Score Calculated?

The Child-Pugh Score is determined by evaluating five clinical criteria: total bilirubin, serum albumin levels, the International Normalized Ratio (INR) or prothrombin time, the presence and severity of ascites, and hepatic encephalopathy. Each criterion is scored from 1 to 3, with higher scores indicating more severe dysfunction. The sum of these scores categorizes patients into Class A (well-compensated disease), Class B (significant functional compromise), or Class C (decompensated disease), which corresponds to increasing severity of liver disease and mortality risk.
